Our honest review
This was a Father's Day gift that I originally thought was maybe a little boring. A Bluetooth speaker — is that really special enough?
Two summers later, it's one of the most-used items in our house. The speaker lives in the garage, gets grabbed for any backyard cookout or project where Matt wants music, goes with us camping, and has been dunked in a lake and lived to tell about it.
The waterproof piece is more important than it sounds. "Water resistant" and "waterproof" are different things. If you're buying a speaker that's going to spend time outdoors — near a pool, at a lake, on a rainy camping trip — you want IPX7 or higher, which means it can be submerged in water and be fine. The cheaper "water resistant" ones handle light splashes but fail fast if they take a real hit.
For outdoor use, battery life is the other feature that matters. Small Bluetooth speakers at the $20 price point often advertise "up to 6 hours" which in practice means 3–4 hours at moderate volume outdoors. The $40–$65 range gets you 12–24 hours, which is what you actually need for a full day outside without thinking about charging. Matt's current speaker has outlasted us on every camping trip we've brought it on.
Sound quality: in the $40–$65 range, you're getting genuinely good sound for outdoor spaces — enough volume to fill a backyard, clear enough that you're not just hearing thumping bass. The JBL Flip and Charge series, Anker Soundcore, Ultimate Ears Wonderboom — these are the category leaders with 100K+ reviews each, and they're in this price range.
For dads who spend any time outdoors, in the garage, or at the grill — this is the gift that actually gets used. Not a shelf decoration.
